Professional gypsy goat herder Lani Malmberg and her cashmere goats were hired by the Roaring Fork Transportation Authority to clear away the unwanted weeds lining the Rio Grande Trail. They started down valley in Glenwood Springs with 400 goats Sept. 1, and 200 goats are finishing today in Carbondale due to budget restraints. Malmberg has her master’s degree in weed science and explained the benefits of this type of weed clearing for the ecosystem. The goats have several jobs lined up within the next month, including jobs in Fort Collins; Carson City, Nevada; and Denver. RFTA has a three-year contract with Malmberg, so the goats will return at a similar time next year.
