Lani Malmberg and her herd of 500-600 cashmere goats will return to Bear Creek Park East on Wednesday November 4th for ten days to two weeks of grazing. The gardeners raise money each year to bring in the goats for noxious weed control in 20 acres of the park around their 2-acre organic garden. The grazing also provides fire mitigation. This organic form of weed control enables the county to avoid spraying herbicides near the garden.
The public is invited to come to the park to see the goats and the border collies that manage the herd. It’s best to leave pets at home when visiting the goats. For the safety of all the animals, park users are urged to obey the leash law that requires dogs to be on leash at all times in this area.
Bear Creek Garden Association is raising money to bring the goats back each year through the GIVE! Campaign, which kicked off on November 1 and runs through December 31. Those who love the goats and want to support this program are encouraged to join other Friends of the Goats by making a tax-deductible donation at www.indygive.com/bcga
