Texas Country Reporter heads West to get the scoop on Lani Malmberg who is lovingly known as “the goat lady of Cheyenne, Wyoming.”
Lani is known for herding her 500 goats through downtown Cheyenne with her trusty dog Patch. To get where they need to go, Lani and her goats travel under overpasses, over railroad tracks and even across driveways sometimes.
She’s an expert in land restoration, and she uses the goats to achieve that. For instance, Lani has taken 100 goats to an old oil field where the land owner wants to use the goats for restoration of the disturbed property. The goats eat a lot of the pesky plants and natural debris. In essence, they help clean up the land with their special diet.
Lani has known how to herd animals for quite awhile, as her background is in cattle ranching. She couldn’t do it alone, though. Patch the border collie is her second-in-command, and makes it all possible. Lani says that Patch, “gets her,” and refers to him as her right arm.
Together, the two friends make the herding lifestyle a lot easier. When TCR asks her where she lives exactly, Lani replies, “Under my hat. Wherever these goats are, that’s where I am.” She refers to herself as a gypsy and says everything she owns has either four legs or four wheels. What a beautiful, unique and free way of life.
