Food Sleuth Radio, Lani Malmberg Interview : click to listen
Is there an alternative to toxic chemicals for controlling weeds and eradicating noxious, invasive plants? Join Food Sleuth Radio host and Registered Dietitian, Melinda Hemmelgarn, for her interview with “gypsy goat herder,” Lani Malmberg, owner of Ewe4ic Ecological Services. With a Master’s degree in weed science and a history of horse and cattle ranching, Malmberg explains how and why she became a professional “grazier.” Malmberg and her traveling herd of 1200 Kashmir goats provide a safe, natural, ecological alternative to toxic chemicals and machinery for weed control and land restoration. She works and offers workshops and seminars in 10 Western states. She hopes to encourage agricultural colleges to educate students and grow the profession.
Malmberg is also vice president of the Beyond Pesticides Board: www.beyondpesticides.org

“At this point in human history, there’s no place that’s really untouched, and the idea of wilderness really has to be altered in a sense into a sense of gardens; that we’re all gardeners and that we have to care for everything.”
Do you think of the wilderness as something far away? Not in the age of climate change and human population growth. The real wilderness is always underfoot—the complex systems underlying life on Earth that we barely understand. It’s our inheritance, our guardianship to understand traditional and indigenous knowledge of Earth as a vast, cultivated landscape. Land managers such as Miguel Santistevan, Lani Malmberg, and Peter Warshall celebrate the fact that we are all gardeners. They reveal brilliant innovations and ancient wisdom for how to get good at it.
